Fighting to Protect Your Freedom

If you have been charged with a theft-related crime in Michigan, your next move is to consult with an attorney that can help you. Theft crimes can range in severity from misdemeanors to felonies and federal crimes, depending on the facts and circumstances involved.  Courts will particularly consider the value of property or money allegedly stolen and the accused’s prior criminal record when determining penalties. Regardless of the specific offense, theft crimes are considered “crimes of moral turpitude,” meaning they are often viewed distastefully by people who may conduct background checks, such as prospective employers and landlords.

Michigan Larceny (or Theft) Laws

  • Value less than $200: Misdemeanor charges: up to 93 days in jail and fines of up to $500 or 3 times the value of the stolen property (whichever is more)
  • Value more than $200, but less than $1,000: Misdemeanor charges: up to 1 year in jail and fines of up to $2,000 or 3 times the value of the stolen property, (whichever is more).
  • Value more than $1,000 and less than $20,000: Felony charges: up to 5 years in prison and fines of not more than $10,000 or 3 times the value of the stolen property, (whichever is more).
  • Value more than $20,000: Felony charges: up to 10 years in prison or fines of not more than $15,000 or 3 times the value of the stolen property, (whichever is more).
